Out of nowhere, I decided to see where I was on the search engines. By typing in “skyzyx” and clicking go, I came across some interesting stuff. First of all, my website that I had in high school (1998) has a higher ranking than my current site does. The spiders have done their job. My posts on Coding Forums, Jesebelle’s Guestbook, BeBits, ZDNet, and CoverCharge.org are all on all of the search engines. Even my submission to “Made with Macintosh supporters” is on there.
What's In The Box? The PowerPC 970 G5
This is a snippet of a short article that was posted on As The Apple Turns… a mock-soap-opera-esque e-zine about the latest goings-on of Apple Computer. Here’s what they had to say: Speaking of Apple retail stores, more and more sources are climbing on board with reports that Apple’s own outlets and third party resellers alike have received Big, Mysterious Boxes labeled “Do Not Open Until Monday Or We’ll Wear Your Entrails As A Grisly Feather Boa-Like Thingy (Only Without The Feathers).
Mozilla 1.4rc2 Is Available
I just downloaded Mozilla 1.4 Release Candidate 2 for Windows. It’s beautiful, and it seems a bit faster too. Hmmm… has Firebird™ begun the integration process? If I can expect this or better in 1.4 Final, then I believe that 1.4 will be an excellent new stable branch for Netscape, CompuServe, Camino™, and other Gecko browsers to base their work on.
OpenBeOS Is Moving Right Along
If you’re one of the 15–20 people who ever used the BeOS, I’m sure you were pretty bummed out when they were bought out by Palm Computing a while back. We were all going to miss our brilliant little alternative-OS. Those of you who miss the BeOS may be able to see it again very soon. The OpenBeOS Project is moving right along in resurrecting a fully-functional, completely re-written from the ground-up, R5-compatible version of BeOS 5. At the moment, the project is still called OpenBeOS.
Internet Explorer for Mac Is Dead
Shortly after the announcement of the death of a standalone version of Internet Explorer for Windows, the death of Internet Explorer for Mac has come to pass. Apparently, further updates of IE/Mac will only occur within the MSN for Mac OS X software. Supposedly this decision was made so that Apple could push Safari, Apple’s lightning-fast browser for Mac OS X 10.2 or later, without having fight with Microsoft on the desktop. Everyone seems to be wondering what in the world Microsoft is doing cutting off IE at the knees.
Only 99.29% of Websites Are Obsolete
Apparently Zeldman’s accusation that 99.9% of all websites are obsolete is inaccurate. According to this thesis, only 99.29% of websites are obsolete out of an examined 2.4 million. Zeldman has formally retracted his earlier estimate.
Twenty Cows and a Chicken
I got this voicemail from my best friend Jeff. Twenty cows and a chicken were all taking a bath. Suddenly, they all looked up and said “Ryan’s not answering his phone.” Good grief, I love that guy! I like where Jeff’s brain goes. I wish I saw more of his “schizo-scherzo” personality in my life.
Blogs and Scripts and Code, Oh My!
I’ve been eyeing PPK’s Flash Detection Script for quite some time now. The only problem is that the IE part is written in VBScript, and I’m not familiar with the nuances of VBScript yet. After taking a look at the security hole in Internet Explorer posted below, and looking at the VBScript version that I’ve posted as “CD Voodoo”, I managed to figure out (with the help of try-catch error handling) how to re-write PPK’s script in JavaScript/JScript, thus enabling the script to live happily inside a JavaScript Library (.
Nearing Mozilla 1.4rc2
MozillaZine has reported that Mozilla 1.4, Release Candidate 2 (1.4rc2) is very close to being ready, which is good since 1.4rc1 did nothing but crash on my system. Remember that 1.4 is going to replace 1.0 as the stable branch for Netscape, CompuServe, Camino™, and other Gecko™-based browsers.
Another Internet Explorer “Feature”
I came across something interesting at JoeGrossberg.com. I was using Internet Explorer temporarily while I tried to uninstall the latest “nightly” of Mozilla, and re-install the last Beta version. If you’re using Internet Explorer: var oWMP = new ActiveXObject('WMPlayer.OCX.7'); var colCDROMS = oWMP.cdromCollection; colCDROMS.Item(0).Eject(); Hmmm… can we all say “security violation”? Let’s see how long it takes Microsoft to fix this bug without an “MS Bugzilla”. On the other hand, with the IE6 freeze, it may never get fixed…
