I hardly slept at all last night. I’ve had a headache for the last few days, and my throat has been scratchy for 2 or 3 days. I knew it was coming. Last night my nose got all plugged up, which meant two things: I had to breathe through my mouth, which caused my tongue to get all dried out; and I began to snore. I don’t usually snore. My wife says that she never hears me snore, so either I don’t usually snore, or she’s just a really deep sleeper.
Which is Kosher?
I got a message today from Henrik Gemal. He pointed out to me that there are differences in how my Flash Detection Script displays the Flash Version. Flash 7.0 r2 displays as “7.0.2” when flash.version is called. To me, this makes the most sense, since that’s what an “r2” would mean anyways. It also makes it easier when comparing Flash versions to do a String.split() followed by a parseInt() on a particular section of the version string. However, I didn’t know about the occasional developer’s build, namely “Shockwave Flash 7.
Simple Pleasures
I’m watching my daughter sleep… She’s sucking on her Binkey, cuddled up with her stuffed bunny, underneath her Winnie-the-Pooh blanket. She’ll be two years old soon. I can hardly believe it. It was a little over two years ago when my then-girlfriend (current-wife) and I found out she was pregnant sitting in an examining room at Kaiser. She and I were in very different spots in our lives at that point… we weren’t even sure if we were going to stay together.
Pirated Sites
I just checked out Pirated Sites website, and saw my submission at the top of the front page. Granted, it says “Anonymous”, but it was me. Really it was. Destroy Drop was designed by Geir Landro (who is also the guy who wrote dTree). His site was copied in the form of Emoticate.net by a guy who calls himself “Krycek”. I recognized Krycek’s design, and submitted it. If I remember correctly, Krycek tried to play it off as though he was the one who came up with the design, but I knew he was caught.
My Portfolio and Sitemap
I’ve finally put together my Portfolio. It includes some of my better work over the last two years, and covers web, print, and 3D design. I plan to add some graphic stuff sooner or later. I haven’t done alot of work, but there’s enough to justify a portfolio. If you are a web professional or HR guy, take a look and let me know how to make it better. I’m always open to suggestions on how to improve, especially for potential employers… =)
Luposlipaphobia
I went ahead and created a new blog last week called “Luposlipaphobia”. For those who are not aware, “Luposlipaphobia” is in reference to an old comic strip called “The Far Side” by Gary Larson. Luposlipaphobia: The fear of being pursued by timber wolves around a kitchen table while wearing socks on a newly waxed floor. Although I don’t actually have this fear, it’s rather entertaining to pretend that I do. On the other hand, how many of us don’t have Luposlipaphobia?
A New Blog?
I’ve been thinking about creating another blog. I want to keep the same exteroceptive, web-related blog I have, but I’m thinking about also keeping an introspective blog as well. That could be pretty dangerous though. One that involves my personal life could be okay, but one that exposes my inner thoughts and feelings could be very dangerous… like cooking with Hydrogen. It’s been a while since I’ve updated or commented on my daughter’s website, JuliannaGrace.com. I suppose more commenting about her could be fine.
The Latest Goings-On
Jeffrey Zeldman of Happy Cog Studios and Douglas Bowman of StopDesign are working with Apple to bring standards-compliance and forwards-compatibility to Apple’s very simple, elegant, and full-of-panache website. Bowman has commented that this doesn’t necessarily imply an visual changes, but I don’t believe that they would necessarily be ruled out either. It’ll be exciting to see my favorite computer company convert to web standards with the help of two leading figures in web design. I’ve also seen comments from Eric Meyer and Todd Dominey.
Spoofing, Spamming, and Formmail
For the last few days, I’ve received gibberish emails from… myself. Well, not my actual account, but from the Skyzyx.com domain, with subject headings listing the URL of my formmail.cgi script. If anyone out there is receiving spam from me, I apologize, it’s not me. I use PHP to have messages sent to me, so I don’t even use Formmail. I’m going to delete it just to be safe, as I don’t want this to continue. Zeldman had the same problem recently, and although I can’t find it, I remember reading that someone else was having the same problem.
Building Better Websites
After checking out this post over at Mezzoblue, I must comment that this has been my process for building websites for the last year-and-a-half or so. Call it preaching if you will, but it is always better to design sites in standards-compliant browsers first (Mozilla, Firebird, Safari, Netscape 7, IE5/Mac), then almost-compliant browsers next (IE6/Win), then the subpar browsers (IE5.x/Win), then in crap browsers (Netscape 4.x). I always develop in Mozilla or Firebird. Often times, I completely forget to check to see if IE can swallow the valid code.
