I’ve got two posts on my laptop that I simply haven’t had the time to post. I’ll try to get to it this evening. Meanwhile, I recently found out that my cookie script has been recommended on IBM’s forums, my Java detection script has been talked about on Sun’s Java forums, my Message Center 5.5 script is gaining popularity at Coding Forums, and I continue to get help with ideas to improve my Flash detection script (which uses a format that I will soon switch all of my other detection scripts to because it’s more flexible).
Growwwwwl...
This year’s WWDC “Stevenote” is over. Among the more notable points: Tiger is a fully 64-bit OS… which is gonna allow the PowerMac G5’s to move so fast that they catch fire. “Expose for Widgets”, which is super similar to Konfabulator “Spotlight” which sounds an awful lot like the planned database-style search integration in Longhorn. 30-inch (wipe off your drool) displays RSS integration in Safari I was able to keep up with the play-by-play via Mac Minute, Apple-X, and Mac Update.
WML/WAP Feed for Cell Phones
By the way, if anyone came here looking for a WML/WAP feed for their cell phone or PDA, I’ve got one now.
Haiku, Gmail, and Web Standards
Haiku Does anyone here know what “Haiku” is (…and no, I’m not talking about a 17 syllable Japanese poem)? Haiku is the brand-new name for an open source project that was formerly called “OpenBeOS”. How many here know what OpenBeOS is? OpenBeOS is a project whose goal is to re-create, from scratch, an open source version of the late BeOS 5. BeOS was a very cool operating system that had many modern-OS features before Windows, Mac OS, or Linux did.
Upgrade to Movable Type 3.0
Well, my upgrade to Movable Type 3.0 went well. I’ve decided to stick with MT for now. I’m still considering Wordpress for my “big redesign” since it’s written in PHP, and therefore easier for me to hack at. We’ll see how it all actually turns out though. For the time being, I’m still accepting all comments from everyone. However, provided that I’m still using MT a few months from now, I’m planning on requiring a TypeKey account for unmoderated comments. Users without a TypeKey account (a few months from now, mind you) will still be able to post comments, but I will moderate them before they actually get displayed on my site.
What's New?
Mozilla As the rest of the world is reporting, Mozilla Firefox 0.9 is now available, as well as a release candidate of Mozilla Thunderbird 0.7. Awesome. For those who were using bleeding edge builds of Firefox, you’ll need to manually move your profile data to the new folder. The Profile folder changed twice since Firefox 0.8, and FF 0.9 only moves the 0.8 profile rather than the 0.8.0+ profiles. Gmail I got a GMail invite today. I haven’t used it much yet since today was a very busy day at work, but I like how I’m told I’m using 0% of 1 Gigabyte.
OpenOffice.org, Mac OS X, and X11
After realizing that the pre-installed copy of Microsoft Office was simply a 30-day trial, I had the wonderful experience of trying to get OpenOffice.org installed today. Because there hasn’t been a native “Aquification” release of OpenOffice, I started reading directions about installing XDarwin — an open source version of the X-Windows X11 windowing system. Time to fire up the old command line. Woo-hoo! I’ve spent a bit of time fooling around with both BeOS 5 and Red Hat Linux 8.0, so the Posix-compliant shell isn’t new to me.
Re-learning Macs
Well, I’m getting better at this Mac OS X thing. I’ve been fiddling with it all for far too long today — trying to get some essentials installed — and I’m getting better. There are some things, however, that are irritating me although it’s not really Apple’s fault. The first would definitely be the lack of Feed Demon (my absolute favorite RSS reader) for Mac. I got NetNewsWire Lite installed, but ease of use and features aren’t even comparable to Feed Demon.
PowerBook Goodness!
This morning, I have two computers sitting in front of me: The first is the one that I built from scratch a few months ago. That one has been almost completely unused (as of late) except for trying to get Windows XP re-installed from a scratched disc. My best friend is coming up this week, and I’m having him bring his Windows CD so I can use my serial. Once I get XP re-installed, I can finally begin the process of re-installing the rest of my applications, and getting my digital life back in order.
The Ant and the Grasshopper
This will probably ruffle some feathers, but it’s funny, so I really don’t care. I got this in an email from a friend of mine. Old Version: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he’s a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.
