I feel very strongly about supporting bands and musicians. I don’t, however, like supporting the record companies that try to rape them for their own greedy purposes. I came across this blog post over at Jeffrey Veen’s site, and completely agree with it. There’s a lot more that I’d like to write about this, and I’m sure I will someday soon, but until then, I’d like to post a link to this short article: So is this bad? Am I hurting the artists by “stealing” their music?
Blocker and Comment Spam
Something has just occurred to me: I haven’t had hardly any comment spam for a few months now. Did the spammers forget about me? I doubt it. Does Blocker have another side-effect that I hadn’t realized earlier? I’d appreciate any feedback from other Blocker users on this. Have you guys noticed a sharp decline in the comment spam you’ve been getting? Are you still having problems with certain ReferSpam entries? Are you getting more or less spam email in your inboxes?
Tweakin' Styles
I’ve done a smidge of tweaking out my CSS file, and I’ve tweaked the behavior of my stylesheet switcher widget. If you’re getting plain text, you need to manually choose either the “default” or “classic” style. After you kill the cookie, close your browser and re-open it, and you shouldn’t have a problem. Contact me if you do.
Suggesting Improvements to Blockbuster
I downloaded Macromedia Central today. I was browsing the Macromedia website when I came across it, and I thought it looked interesting. One of the features that they have is a listing of movies playing, and movie times in your area. “That’s awfully useful”, I thought, “but it would be better for me if this information was available as an RSS feed of some sort. I did a bit of digging around, and looked up some movie and video rental sites, when I decided to visit Blockbuster.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
I’ve been wanting to see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Unfortunately, my two-year-old can’t be taken to movies, and it’s pretty tough to find a babysitter on a Saturday night. Luckily for my wife and I, we’ve got a sitter for this weekend, so I think that we’ll go see this. I came across a review this morning for the movie, and it only reinforces my desire to go see it. First of all, it has one of the most realistic depictions of a relationship I have ever seen.
Kill “No Right Click” Scripts
I was being a nerd today, and was digging through the list of bugs for Mozilla 1.7b (and the latest Firefox). I came across this bug that I thought was very interesting. It allows you to kill scripts that attempt to block users from right-clicking on the page. Quoted from the bug report: Here’s the layman’s explanation: In the address bar, type about:config and press Enter Search for a Preference named dom.event.contextmenu.enabled Double click its entry and change it to false Mozilla will now show the context menu even in pages that try to hide or replace it.
Bye, Bye, BuyMusic.com
Do you guys happen to remember BuyMusic.com and all of the fuss from the web standards community this past summer? Well, according to the guys over at As the Apple Turns, it appears that the BuyMusic.com experiment was a complete and utter failure. Are we suprised? We think not. I suppose it was a bad idea to lock out users of Mozilla, Opera, Safari, Linux, MacOS, and other technologically advanced groups of people.
Blocker 1.3 Revision 2
Blocker 1.3r2 is now available. Revision 2 includes a few more referrers, and takes into consideration some ideas from other Blocker users. Get it while it’s hot.
Pro-Choice
I’m 100% for women’s rights. I’m also 100% for human rights. I’m also 100% for the women’s right to choose. When it comes to not wanting kids, she can choose to not have sex, she can choose to use birth control, she can choose to make responsible choices. People who are pro-abortion have chosen a very sly way to market their ideas. They call it “Pro-Choice”. Everyone wants to have a choice, right? I know I do. I like being able to choose my clothes, music, spouse, and all sorts of other things.
